Each emotion is associated with an internal organ—and when one emotion is too intense, it impacts that organ’s ability to function properly. This is because each emotion impacts the circulation and direction of energy (Qi) in the body in distinct, but predictable ways.

Compared to biomedicine where mental and emotional processes are connected to the brain (reactions in the cerebral cortex, limbic system, and hypothalamus), these processes are driven by the internal organs themselves.

Have you ever heard someone say they had a “visceral reaction” to something? There is a reason: our emotions are experienced physically as much as they are mentally.

In other words, our psychology affects our physiology, ie. how our body is supposed to function under healthy circumstances.

Of course, emotions are natural and healthy – they are not “good” or “bad.” However, they can be balanced, repressed, or excessive. When an emotion is stuffed-down as well as even experienced repeatedly or inappropriately (out-of-context), it can show in the body as physical symptoms associated with its paired internal organ. The same is true in reverse: if the physical functioning of Qi (energy) of an organ is impaired, it can reveal itself as that organ’s paired emotion.

Here are a few examples of common emotions and how they are embodied:


Although the Heart feels all emotions, Joy is the most closely linked emotion. Joy can also be interpreted to describe over-excitement.

Associated Organ: Heart

The heart’s function is to regulate itself as well as the body’s blood vessels; maintaining an even and regular pulse. The Heart is connected to our vitality and consciousness. The health of the heart is expressed through the tip of the tongue, complexion, and arteries. Joy relaxes and slows the movement of Qi.

Symptoms from a Heart or Joy imbalance can result in:

  • Palpitations
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Nightmares
  • Mania


Sadness is said to include grief and regret, and is closely connected to feelings of nostalgia.

Associated Organ: Lungs

Sadness affects the Lungs, whose functions include respiration, creating and distributing qi throughout the body, regulating sweat glands the skin, as well as maintain boundaries between our internal and external as seen in a healthy immune system. Sadness ultimately weakens the Lungs and causes the Qi to dissipate.

Symptoms of a Lung or Sadness imbalance can result in:

  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Allergies & asthma
  • Getting sick frequently
  • Dry skin, eczema, etc.
  • Waking between 3am-5am
  • Crying easily & frequently

*When the Lungs are impacted for long enough, it can directly affect the Large Intestine, its paired Yang organ, leading to issues with elimination (Constipation, IBS, IBD, Ulcerative Colitis, etc.)


Worry is one of the most common emotions that may include obsessive thinking, dwelling, and mental work that requires intense focus.

Associated Organ: Spleen

Worry primarily affects the Spleen, whose responsibilities include food digestion, nutrient absorption, energy production, as well as the formation and management of blood. For women especially, the Spleen plays an important role in maintaining a regular menstrual cycle by influencing the duration and quantity of blood lost each month. The Spleen also governs the “sinews” and muscles of the body and is connected to the mouth and lips. Worry weakens the Spleen and causes the Qi to become stuck and “knotted.”

Symptoms of a Spleen or Worry imbalance can result in:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Poor digestion, bloating
  • Loose stools or diarrhea
  • Bruising easily; bleeding disorders
  • Long/Heavy Periods


Anger is also interpreted more broadly to include emotions of frustration, irritability, jealousy, resentment, and animosity.

Associated Organ: Liver

Anger affects the Liver whose main role is to ensure the smooth flow of qi and blood throughout the body. It also stores blood, which again, for women is important for ensuring a pain-free, regular cycle. The Liver is also expressed through the strength of the tendons, hair, nails, as well as the eyes. The effect anger has on the body depends on how it is processed: whether it is bottled up or expressed outward by yelling, for example. Overall, anger causes the Liver Qi to stagnate and fester, leading to poor circulation and/or the generation of internal “heat” (think: redness, a rising dynamic, agitation).

Symptoms of a Liver or Anger imbalance can result in:

  • Verbal or violent outbursts
  • Depression
  • Red face and eyes
  • Dizziness, High Blood Pressure
  • Waking between 1am – 3am
  • Headaches
  • Stiff Neck & Shoulders

Fear arises from chronic anxiety, insecurity, or trauma—things that are not present. It is also linked to weak willpower and isolation.

Associated Emotion: Kidneys

Fear impacts the functioning of the Kidneys (and Adrenal Glands which are considered one system). The Kidneys are considered our “life gate.” They share similar roles to the Thyroid. Figuratively, the Kidney’s are like our body’s batteries. They are responsible for our longevity, growth & development, metabolism, temperature regulation, fertility, as well as managing our stress response/energy levels on a daily basis. They are expressed in the low back, bones, ears, and teeth as well. It’s no surprise the Kidneys govern fear: in biomedicine, the adrenal glands produce cortisol and norepinephrine when we are faced with threatening situations, stress, and major life changes. Fear ultimately weakens the Kidneys causing the Qi to descend.

Symptoms of a Kidney or Fear imbalance can result in:

Shock is considered a sudden emotional reaction to something that is present and is associated with trauma, terror, fright, and being startled.

Associated Organ: Gallbladder

Although shock can be associated with joy and affect the Heart, it is more closely linked to fright and therefore the Gallbladder, whose primary e ie is to store bile produced by the Liver. It’s channel runs up the side of the body, along the back of the shoulders, as well as the side (temporal region) of the head. When affected, symptoms in these areas of the body can arise. When the Gallbladder is balanced emotionally, sound judgement, courage, and making decisions comes easily. Shock causes the Qi to scatter.

Symptoms from a Gallbladder or Shock imbalance can result in:

  • Timidity (startled easily)
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Temporal Headaches
  • Poor Digestion, especially with fatty foods

Corona virus just like H1N1 and SARS virus will soon be a thing of the past. Human beings are resilient when it comes to survival, rather than resistive to change. There have been pandemics before and man has survived its onslaught by coming together.

Just like the man on the surf board fearlessly manoeuvres the waves to reach the shore, we have to overcome our incessant fear of the worst.

The universal concept of ‘ Oneness’ is now becoming a reality for all of us. No longer are we divided in grief, instead the boundaries of selfishness and self-centred ness have broken to give way to togetherness. The subtle energy of the virus has united billions to fight for their life. Instead of fearing its wrath which is being hyped to a nuclear holocaust, look at it gently as a ‘wake up ‘ call.

The more man is divisive in nature, nature reciprocates with the same. The more man hurts, sabotages and attacks the very earth which nurtures, he will have to pay for his misdeeds. Man has awakened a ‘sleeping giant’ and is paying the price for it. A collective effort to harness our ‘ mothering’ instinct to help the virus to rest in its cradle can help human kind to survive.

Let us know that every time we abuse the environment, extinguish species and kill harmless animals to satisfy our gluttony, nature will attack in unfathomable ways. Man has to respect and honour the fact that the earth is a home to millions of species and learn to co-exist with them. When man refused to co-exist with man we had 9/11 which turned nations against each other. Back home we suffered the train blasts and Taj attacks. When eye for an eye becomes mans mantra, then the tiniest particle of consciousness turns to break mans resolve. As within, as without; as in, as out. We live in a mirrored existence and so we must change to expect one.

Let us not fight this consciousness, instead pray for its peace. Thank its presence, which will allow it to rest. I have always believed that nothing happens without a reason. The reason is always for my higher good. Thus, if this occurrence is for my betterment, then what is Corona indicating to me?

In the last week, nations are talking about health issues, diet and sanitisation rather than economy. Companies are looking at safety of employees than their financial losses. Schools and colleges are concerned about the health of their students than the exams and parents are expressing their love rather than worry about the marks. We are down to basics- love, health and happiness.

A nation that just a month ago was communally divided, is focusing on all it’s citizens as one. In the quarantine wards across the world, man is helping his coloured brothers. It does not matter whether he has worn a turban, grown a beard or covered herself with a hijab. Let us learn to live in peace with our differences instead of being at war with them.

The message of the corona virus is clear: ‘ Together we can survive, Divided we will fall. ’

One day a peasant’s donkey fell into a well ..
The animal cried loudly for hours, while the farmer tried to find something to do.
Finally, the farmer decided that the donkey was already old and the well was dry and needed to be covered anyway; it wasn’t really worth taking the donkey out of the pit ..
He invited all his neighbors to come help him. They each grabbed a shovel and started throwing dirt into the well.
The donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he quieted down after a few shovels of dirt.

With a little thought on both sides you can live happily with your teenager. For most of us, living with a teen can often feel like a stranger has moved in. The long summer holidays can be a particularly tense time, when teens want to kick back and relax after end of term exams. They want to sleep in late and watch TV till the small hours. You may feel you’re drowning in their mess. So, what do you do?

I feel personally living together happily through the teen years works best if clear boundaries are set early.

“Decide what your ‘bottom line’ is and stick to it,”. “In our house the rules for my son is: tidy up after yourself and cook one evening a week.” just setting in !

There needs to be set aside a space for your teenager in the house, where they know they can relax and spend time with their friends while you’re at home. That way, neither of you should feel you have to ‘retreat’ to your bedroom, and it should make for a more relaxed atmosphere. “It could be anywhere – maybe the garden in summer, or the dining room.

Untidy bedrooms

Much as you want to, going in and roaring at them to: “Clean this mess up NOW!” rarely works. You can’t magically train your untidy teenager to be tidy – but you can limit the damage. Try these ideas: 

Remember that your teen is entitled to their privacy, and they should be responsible for their own room.

Try not to dwell on the state of the room. If you’re going to go in, give a fair warning so they can tidy away anything they don’t want you to see. For the rest of the time, close the door.

Set boundaries, for example: “Dirty clothes will be washed if they go into the laundry basket; we all do our own ironing; we all tidy our own bedrooms and cupboards.”

If your teen refuses to keep to the boundaries, then it may be necessary to withhold a benefit they currently enjoy – maybe pocket money, or being able to have friends round. “Children should understand from quite young that running a home is something we all do together, and that a contribution from everyone is essential.”

Try negotiating: for example: you won’t go in searching for the missing mugs and dinner plates if they bring them downstairs to be washed up without being asked.

Money for chores

“Encourage your kids to tidy away after themselves from at least a year or two before they reach their teens. That way, they’re less likely to always expect payment for doing anything around the house.”

Ask what they feel would be reasonable to do around the house, then say what you’d like them to do. From there, it should be possible to find a mid-way point you both agree on.

Be wary of always paying for chores – otherwise you run the risk of having kids who won’t do anything without money at the end of it. There may be other chores over and above for a bit of extra money, but it’s best to establish a rota for regular jobs.

Throw in the occasional extra request as well, to reinforce the idea that you all contribute to running the home and that you’ll do things for each other without expecting payment: for example: “Would you mind just popping some washing in the machine for me while I’m out?”

Clearing clutter

The rule to establish: put things back where they belong after use – especially food items that should be stored in the fridge.

Remind your teen to store school items in their room, where they are easily seen and available when they dash out to school or start the next day’s schedule in the morning.

More living together tips:

*Designate each teen some space in the bathroom for their own toiletries and insist they put things away after use.

Let teens change their own beds and be responsible for cleaning their room. If they share a room they’ll have to learn how to negotiate – an excellent skill to have.

Put a reminder on the fridge that they need to check you don’t have any plans for the food inside before scoffing it. Or label anything that should not be eaten as you need it for the next meal.

Everyone should agree to keep family rooms free from clutter – this works both ways.

Laundry: don’t just do it all. Show your teen how to use the washing machine, check labels and iron if necessary. It’s a skill they’ll need when they leave home.

Serotonin, the ‘happy hormone’ is a neurotransmitter predominantly created in our digestive tract. It’s known to influence our mood, memory, sleeping habits, appetite, cravings, pain senses, digestion, blood vessel tone and even our body temperature regulation.

While Dopamine is responsible for that instant gratification feeling, Serotonin is all about delayed gratification for larger rewards. It helps us to hold out for better things, persevere and be patient. Low amounts of serotonin have been linked to depression and other mental health issues.

When our levels drop we start to feel irritable, impatient, uncontrollable in our impulses and have difficulty concentrating. Decreased serotonin could mean a number of things: either our brain is just creating less of it, we have fewer receptors or the receptors that exist aren’t sustaining it very well, or even that it is being broken down too soon for its effects to take place properly.

Sun : More of it !

For any of our neurotransmitters to function, in fact for us to operate well in any aspect, we need sunlight. Vitamin D is part of what makes our life force energy. The best time to get optimum amount of sun exposure is from 11am to 3 pm for a minimum of 10 minutes. The sun’s UV light gets absorbed by our skin and then converted to vitamin D. So take walks, exercise, swim outdoors or just sunbathe.

Bright light in general also increases serotonin activity, however man-made light pales in comparison to natural light and cannot fulfill the bodies requirements completely. Avoid staring at blaring LED screens in the night as that actually prohibits the conversion of serotonin into melatonin which is required for peaceful sleep.

This is intricately linked to our bodies (and every other creature on Earth) circadian rhythm that is in tune with sunrise and sunset, which means having a proper sleep cycle is also necessary. Milk is also packed with Vitamin D so if you can’t get enough sun make sure you drink a glass of milk daily!

Heal your heart

Perhaps, this is the most important of all. Changing your lifestyle and your environment will help you to an extent, but to make lasting change, we must transform our internal environment. It will in turn, manifest in our external environment. In these trying times, I have at last understood the meaning of Abundance.
I have understood the difference between ‘require’ and ‘acquire.’ I know that ‘ more’ cannot be equated with happiness and ‘less’ does not lead to sorrow.

My grandfather earned 100 rupees a month and my grandmother would save fifty. They ate what made them healthy, spoke little and spent time reading. Dad enjoyed his work and music and time spent with his music school while mum tended to her kitchen garden & bringing up my father & the family of 6 ! They ate frugally, spent sparingly and lived within their means. They found time to increase their faith for their life was lived sensibly. They didn’t feel over -whelmed by market slump nor did their desires lead them to gluttony. Everything was accepted just as it was, but that didn’t mean that they didn’t work hard or put in maximum effort. Each individual worked tirelessly to better his life not lifestyle ! Each family thought about every family members square meal not only his. It’s not that it was a utopian society, but there were more people who were satisfied than dissatisfied. This is the reason that they lived without poverty consciousness and were able to light the torch of independence.

Society over the last thirty years has developed poverty consciousness not prosperity consciousness. Though the per capita income of an average household has grown with both partners working, a young enthusiastic work force, the spread of internet and media has led to uncensored buying and man wanting to fulfil all his amorous desires,
happiness has been shown the door.

The growth of the Law of attraction workshops focus on ‘ How to grow Rich, not Richer.’ They profess with more income you feel financially rich; with a swankier car you feel socially rich; With a mansion you feel emotionally rich; With a trophy wife you feel visually rich and with kids studying in an elitist school you may feel futuristically rich. This materialistic mindset is responsible for this current crisis not the virus. This ‘Get Rich Quickly’ policy has corroded the fabric of countries beyond repair.

The real purpose is to feel richer than the rich !

To feel that the small apartment is comfortable; to feel the bike, car or cycle you have takes less to maintain and that your wife and kids are happier as they don’t play the game, ‘ Why can’t I be like you ?’ You don’t worry about the garment you will wear at your friends wedding, nor think of how to celebrate your child’s birthday. You can go on a picnic, lie down, take selfies and even post them just for the fun of it. You can laugh out loud and scream loudest.

Prosperity Consciousness is about acting sensibly and sensitively to the needs of others. It’s to value what you have gained with your effort and treasure it. To know that what you have received is what was meant for you. To not question the decision of the Divine and accept is with grace. To be a grateful receiver and a graceful giver !

You are abundant and prosperous, not by what you have but by what you do ! The manner is which you conduct yourself, the way you speak, the words you utter and the company you keep. You experience abundance by the books you read, the places you visit and the virtues you embody. You are richer by the relationships you cultivate and the culture you create both at home and at work.
